We know it looks like amatures built this site. That is because they did. We work cheap. There are no animations, no video games, and no dirty pictures.
We are selling a book about pumps and water systems for firemen.
That should not surprise you.
This is an introductory text aimed at new firefighters. The book's purpose is to give a basic insight
into the thing a firefighter needs to know most: How to put the wet stuff on the red stuff. The subtitle
of the book is: What You Need to Know at 3:00 a.m. in a Snowstorm. If you have ever been there
as a rookie firefighter, you will know what we mean. This book is aimed at small departments and
as a first lesson for those being trained to run a pumper in larger departments.
In order to convince you to lay out a few dollars for a book, we are publishing sample pages.
If you are a Chief and would like more detail, email us and we will send you half of each chapter.
The book is not totally politically correct. It tries not to be as dull as a phone book. It pokes fun at
rookies, Chiefs, engineers, women, public workers and anyone else that desperately needs it.
This is on purpose. If it is too dull, it won’t get read. There are precious few nuns and virgins
in firehouses, and rough humor is not unusual.
Some of the information is not exactly technically correct, for a reason: it is not necessary to
try to teach at a college level. This is a firehouse level text. There are some excellent university
level texts but they are too detailed, too big, too expensive, and just too dull, for ordinary firefighters.
All members need to have a working familiarity with pumps and water systems. Any firefighter
can end up running the pumper in a small department.
Tables are simplified. Too much information can be zero information.
We have tried to keep the cost down so that everyone can have one. This means all black and
white, few pictures, many illustrations done by amatures, and no whizz bang features. There are
many small diagrams but few photos. It is hard to find photos that illustrate the point desired.
This goes against all the current educational theories that you need big splashy things to
get students attention in today’s TV and internet world. We are not educators, fortunately.
The reader, presumably, has a reason for wanting to know about what is in this book, not to
be entertained, although some entertainment is inevitable.
What will help you at 3:00 a.m. is a gut feel for how pumps, water systems, and pumpers work.
You will not have time to calculate anything. Developing this “feeling” is the purpose of the book.
With any luck you will learn enough so that you will not kill anyone
The only math is in an appendix. If you are an engineer, you may enjoy it. Real people can skip it.
